Flightster Friday: Do Your Research!

Time and time again I run into passengers who have a seating issue. Whether it’s a duplicate seat booking, they’re not seated with their family or the fact that their seat doesn’t recline, every flight brings at least a problem or two.

Let me dissect how some of this works for you so you can make a better, informed decision before selecting a seat and even, how and where you buy your plane tickets.

Duplicate seat bookings. You would think that no two people can book and select the same seat, but oh they can! If someone is checking in at an airport kiosk while you’re checking in online or at a ticket ticket counter its quite possible that two people are selecting the same seat, at the exact same time. This is especially evident with online seat selection. Before the website has time to report back to the reservation system that someone has booked seat “25A” someone else, using the reservation system at a kiosk could have already selected it. This can result in a double booking that isn’t known until boarding. Additionally, if you book your airline ticket through a re-seller like Orbitz, Expedia or Hotwire the lag time between your ticket purchase and the re-seller reporting it to the actual airline may be up to an hour. This gives though folks who book tickets with the airline directly and advantage when it comes to seat selection. This scenario can result in both a double booking and/or the possibility that one of you shows up to the airport and has seats assigned other than the ones you have selected.
