The Counter: Custom Build Your Burger

It used to be that burgers were designed a specific way and placed on a menu for you to order. Whether it be at a fast food drive-thru or at a sit down restaurant, burgers were pretty much the same.

In 2003 The Counter set out to change that. The Counter offers customers a chance to custom build their burgers; and we’re not just talking beef burgers either- turkey, veggie and chicken also.

The moment you walk into the restaurant you’re greeted by a staff member and handed a clipboard which has a few checklists attached to it. This form you’ll use to create whatever type of burger you’re in the mood for. The chain claims to have over 312,000 different combinations and their website said that it’s very rare that two of the same burgers are made in one day.

The menu is designed in five steps 1) Choose the type of burger you’re hungry for beef, chicken, turkey, or veggie; the

weight of the burger after it’s cooked and finally whether or not you would like it on a bun or in a bowl (saving those carbs for later?) 2) Choose your cheese – The Counter has 12 different varieties available 3) Choose 4 toppings from a selection of 21+ 4) Add any sauces you might like and finally 5) Pick out the perfect bun.

If building a burger is difficult because of the sheer amount of options, or you’re just in a very indecisive mood, The Counter also has a selection of pre-built burgers you can choose from.

Aside from the sandwich The Counter has a variety of sides and drinks. On our visit we had the Parmesan and sweet potato french fries which were thinly cut and delicious and went perfect along side our burger and, our mimosa.

Honestly, the mimosas were mixed perfectly. Every one we ordered (yes there was more than one) was an amazing blend of champagne and orange juice.

In the end, we ordered a turkey burger, a regular burger and a veggie. Each one of them savory in their own right because they were built with our individual appetites in mind.

A “The Counter” restaurant can be located in California (with 3 locations in Los Angeles), Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illionis, New York, Texas, Virgina, Washington and out of this country in Ireland. The location we visited was in El Segundo located in Los Angeles and is a short trolley ride away from any LAX Airport Hotel. So, if you’re in the area on a layover or even in between flights and you’re looking for a clean, fun, relaxed and laid back atmosphere please be sure to check it out.

The NYC location is disappointing, at best. The burgers flavprless, the place crowded and the staff are distracted. Glad you had a good experience.
