Tsunami at Japan’s Sendai Airport

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the news of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake to hit Japan this morning at 2:46pm local time.

It was the largest earthquake ever in Japan and the 5th largest on records. The quake triggered a Tsunami with30 foot waves to come ashore and cause massive destruction.

My thoughts to go out to all of those affected and to give you an idea of the power and reach of the tsunami, take a look of this video as the water floods Japan’s Sendai airport, courtesy of the Associated Press.

You’ll be happy to know that the USAF bases, YOKOTA and MISAWA were used to accommodate commercial aircraft that couldn’t land elsewhere. Base personnel and families pitched in to make passengers and crew as comfortable as possible. I was told the Boy and Girl Scout troops were handing out blankets and refreshments.
Landing a 757 or 767 at YOKOTA can be a little challenging.
