Overheard at the Gates #1

I’ve been very fortunate to be traveling the country recently spreading the “InFlight Team’s” message of better, smarter and stress-free travel. What cracks me up though, is the conversations I overhear while waiting for my flights.

These conversations are especially interesting to me because as a crewmember I never hang around the gate areas with “civilians.” I always spend my delays on a plane, in the crew room, or hiding somewhere else.

While in the boarding area for a flight from Los Angeles to Philadelphia at 4:55am I sat opposite a woman about 25 years old, very attractive and her want-to-be-boyfriend/”friend.” He was trying everything in his power to impress her and win her over. She was in LA for vacation and was on her way back to Philadelphia and mentioned to the man that she was visiting the O.C. He then goes into how he’s a surfer, been doing it for years, enters competitions, won awards, on and on and on.

She finally starts to look disinterested and turns away. He then says, “well, yeah, I don’t do it any more though. Now I’m the down to earth realist who wants to settle with a family.”

She looked at him, glared and said, “where did you get that ring on your left hand from?” To which he replied, “I won it in a surfing competition.” And she said, “Did you win your trophy wife?” Now it was hard for me not to start laughing..I started to smile and look away.. and he responded with, “actually, she won me.. I’m the trophy.” She started to grab her things as if to move and said, “well thats impossible, you lack class and respect. Have a great day.”
