I just stumbled across this on the internet. Apparently, David Carroll was flying from Halifax, through Chicago onto Nebraska and witnessed the rampers throwing the guitars his band checked around the tarmac.

He contacted United about paying for his $3500 guitar, they said no. So, he wrote a song.
